Eligibility for .gov:

Give citizens the assurance that they are accessing an official State government website:

State agencies, boards and commissions are encouraged to move to the more simplified .gov format to standardize web address and e-mail.

In response to the National Association of State Chief Information Officer's concerns over inappropriate use of government domain names, GITA in concert with other states initiated an internal practice requiring the State CIO to approve all .gov second level domain name requests for State agencies, boards and commissions. These requests will be honored by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) (the domain name registration agent for government domains) with the approval by the State CIO.  Approval is accomplished with an authorization letter that is signed by the State CIO and submitted to the GSA.

5 Steps to Obtain an authorization letter for your .gov domain:

Visit the GSA Website and check to see if the the domain name you want to use is available.

Step 4:

* Arizona State agencies, boards and commissions: Once you receive a signed authorization letter from the State CIO, visit the GSA Website and register the domain name.

Within a couple of days, you should be able to log into your GSA account and check the final approval status of your new domain name.  Once you have approval status, there will be a place to make your payment online.

Use of the .gov domain name is federally regulated and there are specific requirements for its use.  It is the responsibility of the requesting agency to ensure that they have read, understood and will abide by all GSA guidelines and requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: When do we have to make this change?
